Social Enterprise Support
What Is a Social Enterprise ?
A social enterprise is a business that exists to make a positive social or environmental impact. Like traditional businesses, social enterprises generate income through trading goods or services – but unlike conventional models, their profits are primarily reinvested to achieve their social purpose rather than distributed to shareholders.
Social enterprises come in a range of legal structures including community interest companies (CICs), companies limited by guarantee (CLGs) and some cooperatives. However many charities and charitable incorporated organisations (CIOs) are also social enterprises, as long as they earn at least half their income – although they may not realise it.
Core Features of a Social Enterprise
Purpose-driven
The organisation’s primary mission is social or environmental benefit.
Trading focus
A significant portion of income comes from trading activities, not just grants or donations.
Profit for impact
Profits are reinvested into the mission or community rather than private gain.
Accountable & transparent
Governance structures ensure the organisation stays true to its values and impact goals.
These principles are at the heart of social enterprise, combining entrepreneurial drive with social responsibility.
